Der Zauberlehrling
I wrote this Lied for my sister Annick's 19th birthday in 2015. However, it took until April 2023 for the premiere. It is based on the famous poem of the same name by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, which also inspired Paul Dukas to create his fantastic composition.
Although my composition has its own thematic material, it contains many quotes and allusions to Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice. The many words and the fast tempo in combination with very high passages are extremely challenging for the soprano.
The text is of course about the sorcerer's apprentice who performs magic in the absence of his master and whose magic then gets out of control.
