Am fernen Horizonte
“Am fernen Horizonte” was created in 2018 on behalf of the mezzo-soprano Susanne Schaeffer, who unfortunately passed away a few years ago. She had heard one of my Lieder performed at Jugend musiziert and showed interest in performing a few of my Lieder at a recital. I then wrote this Lied for her.
The text is by Heinrich Heine and is full of strong images that create an oppressive atmosphere. Only in the last line of the poem do we learn that the lyrical self has lost a loved one in the floods.
The piece exists in a high and a low version.

Am fernen Horizonte
Erscheint, wie ein Nebelbild,
Die Stadt mit ihren Türmen,
In Abenddämmrung gehüllt.
Ein feuchter Windzug kräuselt
Die graue Wasserbahn;
Mit traurigem Takte rudert
Der Schiffer in meinem Kahn.
Die Sonne hebt sich noch einmal
Leuchtend vom Boden empor,
Und zeigt mir jene Stelle,
Wo ich das Liebste verlor.
